Spatial Computing Technology: A threat or a complement?

With the rise of spatial computing technology and its dynamic applications, you may wonder whether the technology will 'expel' your beloved phone. Well, spatial computing technology may bring a banquet of immersive experiences along with some conveniences, but it is highly unlikely for it to replace smartphones. The two devices portray unique features, and they both serve different purposes and needs. Therefore, instead of directly competing, they will coexist and complement each other in the digital world.

What is spatial computing technology?

Let's briefly understand what spatial computing technology is.

Spatial computing technology integrates digital information and virtual content with the physical world. This allows humans and machines to harmoniously interact with objects and spaces, offering exciting experiences from both worlds. For this technology to effectively make this uniquely improved environment possible, elements from technologies like Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality (MR), and Internet of Things (IoT) are incorporated together, allowing the virtual and real world to have a noticeable interactive session.

David Randle, a global head of go-to-market for spatial computing at Amazon Web Services (AWS), said that spatial computing promises to offer the "right information at the right time with the right view." He added by saying that spatial computing "enables more natural understanding and awareness of physical and virtual realms."

Matt Rose stated that one outstanding attribute about the technology is its ability to "overlay digital information onto a physical environment." Echoing Alice McCutcheon's sentiments on spatial computing, he said that spatial technology has made every sci-fi movie a reality. He added that the technology is "more intuitive, reducing cognitive load and enhancing decision-making and efficiency because the digital information integrated on the physical world is "in context,"" making the idea a positive thing for the industrial workspace.

So, spatial computing is a whole different phenomenon that does not threaten the existence of smartphones; rather, it brings a new experience into the world of technology that will transform how businesses operate. Still, smartphones will continue to play their unique roles because each device was and is designed with unique qualities that serve different user needs and preferences. On the other hand, spatial computing provides a unique way to interact with digital information in a physical environment. This enriches productivity and innovation in various industries.

5 Reasons Why Spatial Computing Will Not Oust Your Smartphone

Here are the reasons why you need not worry about the emergence of spatial computing into the digital market:

  1. Spatial computing is experienced on your smartphones

Smartphones give a spatial computing experience through augmented reality (AR) applications. This happens when the phone camera, GPS, and sensors overlay digital data onto the physical world, which allows users to seamlessly interact with virtual objects in their environment. For instance, when shopping online, some apps allow users to fit clothes they want to buy virtually from the comfort of their homes using smartphones. For gamers, they enjoy playing games on their smartphones powered by AR elements that overlay virtual characters in the real world. These are just a few examples that show spatial computing is not a competing product that will replace your smartphone but rather, it is a complementing element that exhibits an immersive experience.

  1. Wide Range of Functions

Smartphones portray a wide range of functions apart from spatial computing. They can be used for communication, entertainment, and organizing tasks. For instance, you can use smartphones to carry out tasks like making phone calls, sending messages, and accessing social media platforms. Smartphones also offer a range of apps and services that serve different needs and references. This aspect makes them indispensable in our daily lives.

  1. Smartphones Dominance in Our Daily Life

It is difficult to replace smartphones in their entirety because they are already deeply integrated into our daily lives and routines. The majority are used to carrying their portable handset everywhere they go. They rely on their smartphones for a spectrum of tasks and activities. The reason why smartphones are essential in modern society is their convenience and efficiency.

  1. Portability and convenience

Smartphones have a good level of portability and convenience that spatial computing technology has yet to match. The popular utilization of smartphones in everyday dealings has cemented their place as a must-have tool for communication, entertainment, and productivity.

  1. Well-established Infrastructure

Smartphones have a well-established infrastructure, including app stores and accessories, that makes them convenient and familiar to users. On the other hand, spatial computing technology is still in its early stages of development and adoption, with limitations in terms of accessibility and usability compared to smartphones.

In Summary

The article has shed light on reasons why smartphones are here to stay. It has also highlighted that spatial computing is more of a complement to smartphones and not a competitor. The basic understanding of spatial computing technology, as briefly explained in this article, brings to mind what spatial computing is all about. So, if you had worries that spatial computing will replace your smartphone, need not worry, as it seems that the two technologies can coexist and serve different purposes. It will be interesting to see how spatial computing continues to evolve and integrate with our daily lives alongside smartphones.
